Sophocles: The Author and His Plays

Sophocles was an ancient Greek playwright, born in 497 BCE. His most well known plays are tragedies known as the "Theban plays", one of them being, "Antigone".

The Theban plays all focus on the mythical King Oedipus, who killed his father and married his mother without knowing that they were his parents. As a result, the Gods cursed his family for three generations. The main character of the play, "Antigone" is Oedipus' daughter, Antigone.
