"Zines (short for fanzines or magazines) are independent or self-published publications, often handmade, and informed by DIY ethos. Anyone can make a zine – they can be created in a variety of formats and can include both original and appropriated text and images.
Zine culture was popularised in the 1930s through science-fiction fanzines, and continued to prevail through the rock and roll, punk and riot grrrl movements. Zines have been likened to a pre-internet internet, and while we very much find ourselves in a digital era now, zine culture, although somewhat 'underground', is still thriving." - Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
