Referencing Style Guide: Further Help

Glossary of Terms

Bibliography: A list of all the sources of information used in researching your assignment, in alphabetical order of author’s surname.

Citation: The key details that uniquely identify a source of information, ordered accordingly to a format described by a referencing style.

DOI: The digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique identifier, and should be provided in the reference where it is available. This alphanumeric string is usually located on the first page with other referencing elements in both print and electronic articles. More recent electronic journal articles will be displayed as permanent URL's.

et al.: Latin term meaning ‘and the others’, used to indicate multiple authors in brief citations.

In-text Citation: A citation located at the place in your writing where a source, or idea from a source, is referred to. Depending on the referencing style, this may be brief, full or designated by a number, and either in parentheses or in a footnote identified by a superscript number in the body of your writing at the appropriate place.

Footnote: A note inserted in the footer of a page which include in-text citations.

Plagiarism: Passing off someone else’s work as your own. May be deliberate or unintentional.

Reference List: A list of all the sources referred to in the text (Note that this is different to a bibliography).

URL: The online address of a website (e.g. www.reading.ac.uk). Stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
